Comforting those with cancer

Skidmore helps patients through recovery process
Alison Skidmore describes benefits of studying biology at Huntington University, a Christian college.

“I enjoy being there for my patients. It means a lot to these patients who come in with troubling diseases and comforting them and seeing them through the recovery process.”

Alison Skidmore comes to work every day ready for battle. It’s her job to ensure there are no casualties. She makes it her mission to comfort the sick and see her patients through the recovery process. Alison is a soldier in the fight against cancer and gives her patients hope to never give up.

Alison, a 2006 biology graduate from Huntington University, resides in Tennessee and works as a physician assistant at Franklin Urological Associates. She takes care of patients diagnosed with kidney cancer, prostate cancer, bladder cancer and many other urological problems.

“I enjoy being there for my patients,” she said. “It means a lot to these patients who come in with troubling diseases and comforting them and seeing them through the recovery process.”

Alison heard about Franklin Urological Associates through Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tenn., where she completed her Master of Science degree in medicine through the physician assistant program.

“I love working there,” she said. “I’m the liaison between the doctor and the patient. The position fits my personality perfectly.”

When she first came to Huntington University, Alison felt unsure about what she wanted to study. Thanks to the counseling she received from her professors and an internship through the Enterprise Resource Center on campus, Alison discovered her passion for science and people during a job shadowing experience at a local medical office. She saw what a physician assistant’s everyday responsibilities included and knew it was for her.

Alison also traveled to Haiti in March 2010 with one of her supervising physicians and volunteered at a local clinic for two weeks. She hopes to continue going abroad to heal the sick and hopes to make it back to Haiti for a longer-term trip sometime soon.
