It’s not an easy field to get into, and Miles Allen is the first to admit that. He says it takes blood, sweat and tears to make it in LA. Probably a few sleepless nights, rejection letters and grunt jobs, too. But, in the end, it’s all worth it.
Allen, a 2012 film production major, left for LA during his last semester at Huntington University. He studied at the LA Film Studies Center through The Best Semester Program.
Allen first came to HU to pursue a career in acting. He was happy to learn he could work toward his dream in a well-rounded digital media arts program.
“I was looking for a college that I could study acting, while also having other fields of studies I was potentially interested in,” he said. “HU was one of the few colleges that actually offered all of them. This turned out to be very helpful when I found myself switching over to film my freshman year.”
During the course of his four years at HU, Allen worked on many projects while studying under professors who showed him the in’s and out’s of the field, mostly from their own experiences.
Allen’s shining moment came during his senior year when he and three other students created a 25-minute, full-length feature titled “Sail Away.”
“It was good to start shooting right off the bat in college. You can immediately start to explore all the different aspects of film and see where your strengths lie,” he said.
The film was a semester-long project — one of the largest ever taken on by HU students.
“To film, edit and post a short movie in one semester at this caliber is a huge undertaking and demonstrates their hard work and dedication to the craft,” said Dr. Lance Clark, professor of digital media arts film and communication. “I am so proud of what they have accomplished through the filmmaking process.”
Now, out on his own in LA, Allen has been doing background acting in film, commercials and television after working as a cinematographer and production assistant while at the LA Film Studies Center.
“My ultimate goal is to be a light in the darkness. Whatever that means for me and my career, well, welcome is the will of the Lord,” he said.
