Dr. Stephen Holtrop
Dean of Graduate and Professional Programs Professor of Education
Dr. Holtrop is the Dean of Graduate and Professional Programs and teaches curriculum design and
technology courses in the Master of Education program. His
administrative duties include overseeing the graduate, adult, and online programs on campus and directing the Master of Education graduate
program. He joined the Huntington University Department of Education in
1992 as a specialist in secondary education and technology. Since then his
administrative roles have included department chair, accreditation
coordinator, Assistant Dean for Assessment, and Acting Director of the Professional Programs for adults. He graduated from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan,
with a degree in secondary English education.
For six years, he taught
English and journalism in Miami, Florida, and Orange City, Iowa. His
master's degree from the University of Iowa was in English education and
journalism education, and he earned his doctorate in English education
with an emphasis on teaching writing. Dr. Holtrop has served on the national
boards of the Christian Adult Higher Education Association and the
Center for Research in Adult Learning. He has also served on the Teacher
Education Committee of the Indiana Department of Education and has
served as state chair for teacher education accreditation teams at
colleges around the state. He co-edited books entitled Nurturing and
Reflective Teachers: A Christian Approach for the 21st Century and In Transition: Adult Higher Education Governance in Private Institutions. He has
also published and presented on adult learning, governance restructuring, online education, assessment,
accreditation, curriculum development, faculty development, faith integration, home schooling, and educational technology.
Steve and his
wife, Sharon, have been married 32 years and have three adult-aged
children. Steve enjoys sailing, canoeing, hiking, travel, and photography.
