It was a winding and unexpected path that brought Kris Burgess to Huntington University.
A re-evaluation of his life early on in his college career gave him clarity and showed him that he should transfer schools. That choice brought him to HU, and after discovering the history
department, he knew he had found his true calling.
“My passion for justice and human rights really fit with a law degree,” he said. “I found what God has equipped me to do.”
After leaving HU in 2012 with a history degree, Burgess enrolled in Northern Kentucky University to study law. He hopes to someday be a prosecutor or a personal injury attorney.
“I want to help people who have been wronged or deserve some compensation,” he said.
At HU, Burgess was a standout student, receiving the Barlow award in history in 2011. He was also the runner up in for the Johnston Award 2012, and was the founding president of the university’s law society, Eunomia. But Burgess credits his skills and knowledge to his professors, especially in preparing him for law school.
“They challenge us not only with academic skills but with ethical decisions and moral controversy,” he said. “Huntington provided me with a solid foundation of morals, (and the school) prepared me for these situations that I’m going to face.”
Burgess knows as an attorney he will encounter the sin of the world, sometimes in the clients that he represents. But he knows that his faith will stay strong because of the advice that he received from his professors.
“They were willing to sit down and talk about their life experiences and how they can benefit me,” he said. “It’s a huge benefit of being a Huntington student because you are getting that. … I feel confident with what I have learned here.”
Burgess knows that law school will be tough, but with his soon-to-be bride at his side, he is confident he will succeed.Discover what Huntington University can do for you.
