Internships: Work but well worth it

“Every student should gain some type of experience in their field before graduation, especially if the student is wondering whether that field is for them or not.”

Working as an intern for the Huntington, Ind., Herald-Press during the fall of 2007 confirmed a passion for newspaper journalism in Austan Kas. As an intern, he covered various local sporting events and even designed some pages. These invaluable experiences allowed Kas to develop some crucial journalism skills.

“The number one thing I will take away from this experience is writing under pressure,” said Kas, a 2008 graduate from Frankfort, Ind. “Many nights, I covered a game and had to write my story in 30 minutes or less. It was very nerve-wracking, but it’s a vital part of the job. As time went on, I became better and better at deadline writing.”

In addition, Kas was challenged to develop his skills for designing newspaper page layouts. “After I gained a basic understanding of the (computer) system, I had to learn how to make pages look good. I feel like I have the basics of design under my belt.”

But not everything about journalism was new to him. Taking classes with Dr. Kevin Miller, associate professor of communication, helped Kas feel prepared to take this internship. “Dr. Miller has been wonderful in helping me grow as a journalist,” said Kas. “I have had him for about 10 classes, or so it seems. Amazingly, with each class, I learn something new.”

Kas obtained this internship through Huntington University's Enterprise Resource Center and highly recommends it. “Every student should gain some type of experience in their field before graduation, especially if the student is wondering whether that field is for them or not.”
