HUNTINGTON, Ind.— As a way to recognize those students excelling in the
psychology and
social work departments, both programs created local honor society chapters this year.
Those students who meet academic qualifications will have the opportunity to join the Phi Alpha Honor Society for social work majors or the Psi Chi Honor Society for psychology majors.
“The honor societies allow us to recognize the top 15 percent of our majors and to increase opportunities for our students through awards and grants, publications and sponsored research conferences,” said Dr. Carrie Lloyd, assistant professor of psychology.
Membership into these societies is based on GPA, number of credits and sophomore status.

In addition to the honor societies, both departments have also created student councils in an effort to provide leadership opportunities and camaraderie among students.
“We’re helping them formulate who they are as social workers,” Rick Leone, assistant professor of social work said about the Social Work Student Council.
“It’s to build a sense of community and identity by encouraging members and faculty to share ideas and experiences and offering support to one another in pursuit of present and future educational goals,” Lloyd added.
The councils, or informally “clubs,” will help in organizing campus events, promote awareness of the programs and help to raise funds for the department.
