MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Junior Courtney Baker scored both of HU’s goals on Saturday to extend her team’s season by at least another week as the 5th-seeded Forester women’s soccer team knocked off 4th-seeded Mount Vernon Nazarene University 2-1 in double overtime in first round action of the Crossroads League tournament.
With this win, HU (6-12) advances to the semifinals where they will face top-seeded Spring Arbor University on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
While the Cougars dominated HU in shots taken, 28-16, and tallied ten corner kicks to Huntington’s one, Tillett’s squad overcame the lopsided stats to notch its second win this season over MVNU. HU claimed a 1-0 victory over the Cougars back on October 8.
After playing to a scoreless stalemate in first half, the next 15 minutes proved to much more action-packed. Casey Apple scored in the 51st minute to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead but the equalizer came just eight minutes later. Karina Maldonado set the stage when she pressured a MVNU defender to drop a pass back that Baker intercepted. Several touches later, the New Castle native punched the ball into far post to knot things up at 1-1.
The final thirty minutes of regulation featured 14 shots but neither team could find back netting to set up the first overtime where both teams again came up empty before Baker logged the game-winner, a header on a cross from Becca Grimes, with only 1:24 left in the second OT to bring a dramatic finish to the match.
Caitlin Adams went the distance in goal to log the win. The senior keeper finished with 12 saves.
“The girls were looking forward to tournament time and trying to make some noise,” said Coach Tillett. “Courtney Baker took advantage of her first start up top with two goals and her teammates were able to earn the win! We are excited to continue our season and quest for a conference tournament championship.”
