HUNTINGTON, Ind. – Senior Marc Bowers’ walk-off single in the bottom of the 13th gave the 4th-seeded Foresters a 3-2 win over 5th-seeded University of Saint Francis Saturday afternoon in first round action of the Crossroads League tournament at Forest Glen Park.
Seniors Derek McKinney and John Ripke teamed up on the mound to hold the Cougars in check. McKinney tossed the first ten innings and scattered nine hits and two runs before being relieved by Ripke who provided three innings of scoreless relief. Ripke gave up just one hit and a walk while fanning one to pick up his fifth win of the season.
Offensively, the Foresters were quiet until the sixth when Austin Drummond led off with a single, made his way to third via a Dylan Henricks’ base poke and Blake Ayers’ sacrifice bunt before touching home on a wild pitch to deadlock things at 1-1.
Both teams tallied three hits over the next three innings but came up empty on the scoreboard to send the game to extra innings. The tenth was a chess match as each team manufactured a run, HU’s by way TJ Lindstrand’s run-scoring ground out, to extend the game three more frames until Bowers’ one-out game-winner that came on the heels of back-to-back singles by Dalton Combs and Michael Crowley.
Crowley posted two hits and drew two intentional walks to pace HU at the plate. Drummond also came up big offensively by logging two hits and drawing a walk in the tenth that led to his team’s second run, both of which he scored. Combs was the only other Forester to tally multiple hits.
The Foresters (27-22) host top-seeded Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Monday at 1:00 p.m. in second round action of the tourney.
