Forester basketball runs deep in Merryman family

HUNTINGTON, Ind. – On February 4, Huntington University senior Shane Merryman accomplished a feat few can boast. His 28-point performance against Indiana Wesleyan University was more than enough for him to pass his grandfather, Dean Merryman, on the Foresters’ all-time scoring list.

The elder Merryman, a 1962 graduate of Huntington and member of the HU Hall of Fame, averaged 20.2 points per outing over the course of his career to finish with 1,855 points which placed him 8th on HU’s all-time scoring list until last Tuesday when Shane bumped him down a spot.

Shane is currently 7th on the scoring list with 1,922 points. With plenty of basketball yet to be played, Merryman is closing in on the No. 6 spot that currently belongs to Kyle Ganton who scored 2,126 points during his time in green and white.

In a short ceremony prior to Tuesday’s game against Bethel, Dean Merryman presented his grandson with a ball in commemoration of this achievement.
The Huntington University Foresters compete in 16 intercollegiate sports for men and women. In the past decade, Huntington has produced 39 NAIA All-America honors and 213 All-America Scholar Athlete honors. Huntington University is a comprehensive Christian college of the liberal arts offering graduate and undergraduate programs in more than 70 academic concentrations. U.S.News & World Report ranks Huntington among the best colleges in the Midwest.
