The Foresters struggled to a 1-3 record on the weekend at the Indiana Wesleyan University Tournament.
HU picked up its only win by outlasting Bethel College 27-30, 30-28, 30-22, 28-30, 16-14 in their second match on Friday night. Brittney Smelser dominated at the net with 25 kills while Amy Wilson and Natasha Gayday added 16 and 14 respectively. Kayley Cervenka had a team-high five blocks, Stephanie Stearns had 40 digs and Alyssa Schroeder contributed 59 assists, 26 digs and four aces.
The Foresters dropped their opening match 30-26, 27-30, 20-30, 24-30 to Illinois Institute of Technology. Renee Biberstine led HU with 10 kills. Heidi Christner added seven kills and a team-leading six blocks and Tiffany Malfait chipped in seven kills and four blocks. Stearns tallied 32 digs and Schroeder had 36 assists, 26 digs and five aces.
On Saturday, HU was easy prey for the Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats, falling in three straight 19-30, 21-30, 20-30. Smelser, Gayday and Christner each put down six kills with Christner adding two blocks. Stearns had 14 digs and Schroeder finished with 23 assists.
In their final match, the Foresters showed some signs of life as they took the first game 30-26 from St. Xavier University, but then they lost the next three 18-30, 22-30, 26-30 to succumb to the Cougars. Biberstine had a team-high 13 kills and added five blocks and 16 digs. Cervenka was like a brick wall with her 12 blocks in the match. Stearns recorded 20 digs and two aces and Schroeder dished out 31 assists.
The Foresters now stand at 19-10 on the season.
