With both teams looking to pick up their second MCC win of the year, it was the #24-ranked men's Foresters basketball
team (13-3, 2-1) who made it happen by toppling the #17 Lancers of Grace College (10-6, 1-2) 76-67 in the friendly confines of the Merillat Complex on Tuesday evening.
Tyler Shively got things rolling for HU by scoring the first five points of the game. Lancer David Henry then took his turn by knocking down back-to-back threes to quickly erase HU's lead. The Lancers went on to build a seven-point lead at 18-11 within the first five minutes of play. They held onto the lead until midway through the half when Colin Featherston cashed in on a three and then followed up with a steal and assist to Kellen Zawadzki for the easy lay-in that put HU on top 25-24 at the 9:27 mark. After six more lead changes and two ties, the Foresters headed into intermission with the 40-38 advantage.
The second half got underway with the Lancers knotting the score at 40-40 but then the senior trio of Shively, Kellen Zawadzki and Bobby Jolliff took turns scoring to push the lead to double digits at 53-42 with 12:35 remaining. The Lancers pulled within five on several occasions, with the last coming in the final minute of play but Shively made good from the free line by going 4-for-4 to seal the win.
Zawadzki finished with a game-high 30 points. Shively recorded 18 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals on the night while Caleb Kennedy grabbed a game-high eight boards. Bruce Grimm paced Grace with 24 points. Henry was the only other Lancer in double digits with 17.
Huntington shot 50.0 percent (27-for-54) from the field and dominated the boards 36-20. Both teams committed 12 turnovers.
