Gonterman, Porterfield earn Athlete of the Week honors

Huntington, Ind.— The Huntington College athletic department announced its Athletes of the Week for the week of April 19-25, 2004. Women’s track sophomore Ashley Gonterman and men’s golf sophomore Andrew Porterfield earned the honors for their outstanding efforts during the week’s competitions.


Ashley Gonterman

Ashley Gonterman, a physical education major from Roanoke, Ind. (Homestead High School), led the women’s track team to a second-place finish at the Olivet Nazarene University Mid-Season Invitational. She was one of three individual winners on the day with her first-place finish in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.14. She also added a second place in the 200 in 27.39 and ran a leg on two second place relay teams. She ran the second leg in the 4x100 that finished in 52.16 and ran the third leg in the 4x400 that finished in 4:16.55. The Forester track team will next compete in the Mid-Central Conference Championships this weekend, Friday, April 30 and Saturday, May, 1 at Goshen College.


Andrew Porterfield

Andrew Porterfield, a computer science major from Marion, Ind. (Eastbrook High School), shot a 74 and a 75 in his final two rounds of Mid-Central Conference (MCC) play to earn All-Conference honors. On Tuesday at his home course, LaFontaine Golf Club in Huntington, Porterfield tied for fourth in individual scoring with his 74. On Friday at Black Squirrel Golf Course in Goshen, he was consistent with a 38 on the front nine and a 37 on the back as the team’s top golfer of the day. The Foresters finished fifth in the MCC standings. The golf team next plays in the Regional Preview Tournament at Cobblestone Golf Course in Kendallville on Thursday, April 29 at noon.

The Huntington College Foresters compete in 14 intercollegiate sports for men and women. In the past seven years, Huntington has produced 47 NAIA All-American honors and 78 All-American Scholar Athlete honors.
