The Foresters opened their season winning three of four matches in a round robin tournament at Tri-State University. The three wins garnered HU a second place finish in the two-day event.
On Friday, the Foresters knocked off Albion College in three straight, 30-20, 30-21, 30-15.Tiffany Malfait paced HU with nine kills and six blocks. Kayley Cervenka added seven kills and five blocks. Alyssa Schroeder dished out 22 assists, and Stephanie Stearns had eight digs.
HU followed that up with another straight game win over Goshen College 30-25, 30-10, 30-28. Cervenka had 12 kills and three blocks. Rene Biberstine added 10 kills and Schroeder tallied 21 assists. Stearns had 14 digs and Amanda Meyers served eight aces.
On Saturday, St. Mary's spoiled the Foresters' bid for the tournament title knocking them off in four games 30-32, 20-30, 30-17, 26-30. Heidi Christner led HU's attack with 16 kills. Brittney Smelser led the team with six blocks. Schroeder had 39 assists and Stearns dug 37 balls.
Against the host Thunder, the Foresters found something that worked and stuck with it to get the win 30-21, 26-30, 30-21, 30-22. That something was Smelser at the net putting down 26 kills and adding three blocks. Schroeder led the team with 25 assists and Kellie Hanson added 20. Stearns contributed 18 digs and four aces.
