A talented, young Forester golf team put together its best round of the year on the second day of the MCC Tournament to earn a third place finish. It is the best finish by an HU squad since 1990-91 when they won the conference title.

"To finish third is a huge boost for our golf program and proof that we are headed in the right direction," said Coach Green. "I am so proud of each one of our golfers. They have worked hard all season and shown a lot of improvement."

After posting a team score of 314 in first round action on Monday, HU was in fourth place, one stroke behind Indiana Wesleyan and nine strokes behind Bethel and Marian who were tied for first with a 305 score. Ryan Bonner paced the Foresters with a round of 74 followed by Spencer Batt (79), Justin Imel (80), Patrick Davis (81), and Dan Schroeder and Jeff McVicker (82).

But HU was saving its best for last. On Tuesday, five Foresters turned in scores in the 70s for the first time all year, leading to a season-low round of 297. The score was more than enough to push them up into a solid third place finish.

Batt led the Forester charge by firing a 71 and Bonner repeated with another round of 74. McVicker bounced back with a 75 while Imel and Schroeder both shot a 77. Davis finished with an 82.

"This was a very exciting day," said Green. "As a team, we played the last nine holes at three under par. I think we proved today that Huntington is a team with a pretty bright future."

Bethel shot a tournament low 292 on Tuesday to dethrone eight-time champion Marian College. The Pilots won the title with a two-day total of 597 followed by Marian (605), HU (611), Spring Arbor (619), Indiana Wesleyan (620), Taylor (622), St. Francis (639), Grace (695) and Goshen (725). The top five teams automatically qualify for the NAIA Region VIII Tournament that will be held in the spring.

Bonner, who finished third in the individual scoring with a 148, and Batt, who tied for seventh with a 150, both made the MCC All-Conference team.

The men concluded the fall portion of their schedule with a 28-31-3 record.
