GEORGETOWN, Ky. - The Forester men’s soccer team picked up its second win in as many matches with a 2-1 decision over Mid-Continent University at the Georgetown College Classic Friday afternoon. With this win, HU moves to 2-0 on the season.
It was a tightly contested match with HU just outshooting the Cougars 14-12 with all of the game’s scoring coming in the first period. The Foresters struck first at the 8:44 mark when Lucas Lengacher set up Josh Codd with a beautiful penetrating ball over the top for a 1-0 lead.
Less than eight minutes later, Mid-Continent’s only goal by Jan Chvojan came by way of a scramble in front to deadlock things at 1-1.
It was an exciting half with the game-winner coming in the 36th minute by Brooks Gerke. Codd and Isaac Wust set the stage with a clever combination before Wust sent Gerke in on the keeper where he tucked on inside the post for his second collegiate score.
HU’s defense took over after that, locking down to make sure the Cougars remained scoreless the rest of the way.
“This was a fantastic team effort from the boys,” said Lawson. “Our defense was intense and organized and we generated a couple of classy goals.”
Drew Mattingly finished with four saves in goal.
Unfortunately, Saturday’s contest with the host Tigers was cancelled due to inclement weather. Next up for the Foresters is a home contest with Cincinnati Christian University at 5:00 p.m.
