HUNTINGTON, Ind. - The HU men’s soccer squad (3-0) remained undefeated on the season with a 9-1 win over Cincinnati Christian University Wednesday afternoon at King Stadium. It marks the program’s biggest win since 2007 when the Foresters claimed a 10-0 win over Taylor University Fort Wayne.
It took the Foresters less than three minutes before Jake Essig gave his team a lead that would never be challenged. Brooks Gerke made it 2-0 at the 6:37 mark before the Eagles finally struck back in the 21st minute to pull within one at 2-1.
But it was all HU after that as Tyson Bradley-Kalischuk, Scott Murray and Wes Johnson all found back netting before half to give Coach Lawson’s team a 5-1 lead heading into intermission.
It was more of the same in the final period with another Murray goal sandwiching a pair of scores by Joey Newbery before Paul Holliday capped off the scoring frenzy five minutes before the final horn.
HU’s nine goals came by way of 34 shots while the Eagles managed only two shots. The Foresters also tipped the scales in corner kicks with 11 to CCU’s 0.
Drew Mattingly finished with one save and handled the bulk of the goalie responsibilities until Kyle Burkholder came in for final six minutes of play.
Coach Lawson was pleased with his team’s performance, “The boys found the back of the net early and did a solid job of keeping the pressure on CCU.”
“This was a night we got to see everyone play and I was pleased with the effort especially in the second half. Joey Newbery and Scott Murray had excellent performances.”
Huntington travels to Rochester College on Saturday for a 4:30 p.m. matchup.
