CHICAGO, Ill. - The Huntington volleyball team logged its first win of the season at the St. Xavier/Trinity Christian Crossover Tournament this past weekend.
After dropping a pair of matches Friday at the Shannon Center, the Foresters bounced back to beat the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) on Saturday before wrapping up the tourney with a loss to Trinity Christian College.
The Foresters opened up the tourney by taking Roosevelt University down to the wire before succumbing to the Lakers in five, 25-13, 22-25, 23-25, 25-21, 16-14. Brittany Rooze and Melissa Grossman each tallied 11 kills in the losing effort while Jensen Carnahan recorded 34 assists. Codie Morey finished with a game-tying 23 digs. Rooze and Carnahan also racked up three serving aces apiece.
Against the host Cougars, HU stole the second game but couldn’t piece together the win as St. Xavier finished off the Foresters in four, 25-15, 25-27, 25-21, 25-19. Huntington logged eight team blocks but couldn’t overcome SXU’s power at the net as they outhit their visitors 44-30.
Rooze and Heather Medich each recorded nine kills while Carnahan handed out 26 assists. Morey topped HU with 15 digs while Medich and Audrey Mallers added 11 and 10 respectively.
It was a slow start on Saturday against conference rival USF as HU dropped the first game 15-25 before storming back to win the next three, 25-16, 25-17, 28-26. Carnahan dished out 43 assists with her main targets being Rooze and Keister. They each logged double digit kills, 11 and 10 respectively, to pace a balanced Forester attack.
Defensively, Carnahan and Grossman came up big at the net with three solo block each while Morie finished with 22 digs. HU finished with 12 team blocks to the Cougars’ six.
HU ran out of steam in their last contest of the weekend against TCC as they lost in straight sets, 25-12, 25-12, 25-18. The Foresters managed only 18 kills with Rooze recording a team-high six. Carnahan accounted for 16 assists while Medich and Morey finishing with nine digs each.
The Foresters are now 1-4. They host Goshen College on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
