The Foresters opened their 2005 season on the road at Manchester College and fell 2-1 in overtime. In the early minutes of the game, HU put a lot of pressure on the Spartans, but it wasn’t long before Manchester began to turn the tables. In the 16th minute, the Spartans came up with a breakaway. Huntington keeper Robyn Althoff was late on her challenge and Manchester was awarded a penalty which was converted by Melissa King. At the break, the score remained 1-0, but on the final play of the half Althoff was injured making a save and was unable to return.
Kara Fultz was called on to step in as keeper for the second half. With six minutes remaining in regulation, HU leveled the score at 1-1 when Mindy Perry slotted a ball to Sarah Kaufman who beat a defender and found the back of the net. The score remained 1-1 at the end of regulation but this time it was Kaufman who sustained a cut on her forehead and had to come out of the game just before the whistle.
The first overtime period found Huntington on the defensive and in need of reinforcements. In the meantime Kaufman was patched up and was ready to get back in the game. It was too late however as Manchester’s Melissa Bruns hit the game winner with a strong shot in the 6th minute of overtime.
"We learned today that we still have a lot of work to do to be where we want to be physically but I was pleased with how we got back in the game and kept working," said Coach Tom Datema. "Shannon Holly had an exceptional game in the midfield and I think we have some positive things to build on."
