INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Forester men’s track and field team earned 5th place over the weekend at the Crossroads League Championship while the women finish 7th.
The top three places in each event were named All-Conference. The HU men earned six league marks with sophomore Daniel DeBoni claiming three. The speedster claimed his second All-Conference honor in the 100 meters. In addition to establishing a new PR with his third-place time of 10.74, DeBoni also hit the provisional mark for the 2014 NAIA National Championships.
The Goshen native also ran to a second place finish in the 200 meters (21.67) and was the fourth leg of Huntington’s 4x100 meter relay team that finished third in 42.96. Other members of the All-Conference relay team included Wyatt Jones, Sean Sewell and Scott Skiles.
Also earning multiple All-Conference accolades was sophomore Jake Nash. Nash took second in triple jump (13.06 meters) and tied for third in high jump (1.97 meters), his second All-Conference honor in high jump.
Tyler Herber was the only other Forester to turn in a top three finish. He ran a 32:43.83 in the 10,000 meters to cross the line third. He also registered 5th place in the 5,000 meters by running a 15:37.73.
Huntington was well represented over the course of the two-day event, placing in 14 of the 21 events. Brooks Gerke tallied points in three different field events which included javelin (5th, 46.46m), triple jump (5th, 12.67m) and pole vault (7th, 3.95m).
Other individual point-getters for HU included Brian Menzie in the 1500 meters (5th, 4:03.56), Jacob Stone in pole vault (5th, 4.10m), Kai Foday in javelin (8th, 41.73 m) and Logan Knox in hammer (7th, 44.03m).
Host Marian won the league title with 176.5 points followed by Bethel (151), Indiana Wesleyan (129), Taylor (123), HU (69.5), Spring Arbor (67), Goshen (56), Grace (38) and Saint Francis (7).
Sophomore Krista Wood paced the Huntington women as the only All-Conference honoree. Wood shaved over ten seconds off of her personal best in the 3000 meter steeplechase to finish 2nd in 11:16.13. She earned a second All-Conference badge in the 5000 meters where she placed 3rd in 18:39.73.
The Foresters claimed two other spots in the 3000 meter steeplechase. Christine Sparks finished 6th (11:48.19) with teammate Hannah Moore not far behind in 7th (11:55.28). Other point-getters for HU included Erin Rockey in the 1500 meters (7th, 4:59.26), Shana Christian in the 400 meters (7th, 1:00.92*PR) and Gretchen Spahr in the 5000 meters (8th, 19:06.29).
Indiana Wesleyan dominated the women’s side with 253 points followed by Bethel (159), Taylor (121), Spring Arbor (73), Marian (65), Grace (49), HU (31) and Goshen (29).
The Forester will take a partial squad to Taylor University on Saturday for their spring invitational.
