Strong, Porterfield named Forester Athletes of Week

Huntington, Ind.—The Huntington University Athletic Department announced its Athletes of the Week for the week of April 17-23, 2006. Tennis freshman Stephanie Strong and men’s golf senior Andrew Porterfield earned the honors for their excellent efforts during the week’s competitions.

Stephanie Strong, an elementary education major from Goshen, Ind. (Fairfield High School), went 7-1 in four matches this week to help lead Huntington to three wins. Strong started the week with two wins in the Foresters’ match against Taylor University. She won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and teamed with Kendra Ganz for the 9-7 win at No. 1 doubles. Against Marian College, she again was a double winner with a 6-0, 6-3 victory in singles and an 8-4 win in doubles. In the Olivet College match, she battled for a 6-4, 2-6, 6-0 win in singles, and then finished the week with two more wins against Anderson University, a 6-1, 6-2 rout in singles and an 8-3 win in doubles. The Foresters (10-9) will wrap up their spring season on the road against Cedarville University on Saturday, April 29, 2006, at 10 a.m.

Andrew Porterfield
Andrew Porterfield, a computer science major from Marion, Ind. (Eastbrook High School), dominated both matches this week to earn Athlete of the Week honors for the second consecutive week. In the Region Preview tournament, Porterfield turned in the best score in the 36-hole event. He shot a 76 in the first round and followed it up with a 73 to give him a two-day total of 149. At the Spring Arbor University Spring Classic, he shot a four under par 140 (70, 70) to earn his second medalist honor of the week. Huntington will next compete in the NAIA Region VIII Tournament at Rock Hollow Golf Course on Friday, April 28, 2006, at 8:30 a.m.
