HUNTINGTON, Ind. – With Taylor University’s sweep of the HU softball team Wednesday afternoon, 2-0, 8-3, the Trojans have accounted for half of the Foresters’ conference losses. TU (32-9) currently stands atop the league with a record of 18-4 while HU (19-14) drops to third with a 12-8 record.
The opener was a pitcher’s duel as both teams combined for just ten hits with the visitors owning a slight 6-4 advantage. It was an uneventful, scoreless affair until the 6th when the Trojans opened up the frame with a double and Huntington error setting the stage for HU’s two runs.
It proved to be enough for the win as Kaitlyn Troyer’s double in the bottom of the 7th was HU’s only hit in their final two at-bats. Annie Weaver, Emily O’Leary and Cristin Carter were the only other Foresters to log a base poke in the contest.
Emily Puterbaugh took the loss for HU, giving up six hits, two runs, only one of which was earned, and one walk while striking out five.
Taylor pounded out 14 hits in the nightcap to score runs in all but two innings to take an early lead that was never really challenged. They managed seven runs before the Foresters finally put a dent in the score in the 5th by cashing in on three of their seven hits for three runs.
After Katie DePew and Bess Fiechter each registered infield singles and advanced a base on a double steal, Katie Knous unloaded for a double to drive in both of her teammates. O’Leary ended the inning’s scoring with RBI-groundout to make for a 7-3 contest.
Taylor would go on to tack on one more run in the 6th to wrap up their series sweep against the Foresters.
DePew and Carter both finished 2-for-3 at the plate to pace HU offensively.
Starting pitcher Ariel Sheets was charged with the loss. She lasted four innings and gave up ten hits, six runs and two walks while striking out two before being relieved by Lea Buckenmyer. Buckenmyer tossed the final three innings, giving up four hits and two runs while striking out one.
The Foresters will host Grace College tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
