UPLAND, Ind. - For the third time this season, the Forester softball team dropped both games of a season series. This time it was the Trojans of Taylor University who handed HU back-to-back losses, 7-2, 2-1, at Gudakunst Field Wednesday afternoon.
Game one started off well for the visitors as Katie Bowers knocked in Katie DePew in HU’s first at bats to give her team the day’s only lead of 1-0. It was short-lived; however, as the Trojans came storming back in their half of the frame to register three runs and jump on top 3-1.
O’Leary closed the gap to within one in the third with an RBI-single through the left side but it proved to be all she wrote for the Foresters as they managed only two hits the rest of the way while Taylor recorded four more runs to pull away for the win.
Bowers and Cristin Carter pounded out two hits apiece with Bowers tacking on her 14th RBI of the season.
Starting pitcher Kaylin Yon took the loss for HU. She tossed the first three innings and gave up five hits, four runs, three of which were earned, two walks while striking out one. Emily Puterbaugh took over mound for the last three innings and allowed five hits and three runs while striking out four.
The nightcap was a pitcher’s duel between HU’s Marcie McDougle and TU’s Hannah Klebesadel. Both pitchers went the distance and combined to give up only eight hits.
Trailing 2-1 heading into the seventh, the Foresters were poised for a heroic comeback in their final at bats. With two outs and the tying run on first, Katie DePew sent one to the fence but Taylor’s Sarah Heath was there to make a running grab to deny the Foresters an epic finish.
HU’s lone run came in the fifth when Lindsay Shellabarger clocked one over the left field fence, her fourth homer of the season.
McDougle suffered her seventh loss of the season. She gave up two runs, only one of which was earned, on five hits while striking out four.
Shellabarger, Bowers and Knous accounted for HU’s only hits of the contest.
The Foresters are back in action on Thursday to host Concordia University (Mich.) at 3:00 p.m.
