The Foresters competed in the ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) Midwest Regional Championships at Cedarville University over the weekend. Senior Gonzalo Vivas won five consecutive matches over the three day tournament to bring home the men’s singles championship.
In the finals he defeated eighth seed Jose Villavisencio from Indiana Institute of Technology in three sets, 7-5, 6-7 (7-4), 13-11. Both players are from Lima, Peru and trained together at the same tennis facility in Peru. Vivas will compete in the ITA National Small College Championships at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Alabama. The singles championship will bring together the best eight players in small college tennis from around the United States. The tournament will be held October 15-18.
In other Huntington matches, the women’s doubles team of Haley Neiderhiser and Raelyn Althoff made it to the semi-final round, losing 8-5 to an Ohio Dominican duo. Neiderhiser advanced to the consolation semi-finals of the women’s singles; losing in a third set super tiebreaker, 6-2, 5-7, 7-10, to Marcela Bosch of Indiana Institute of Technology. Althoff made it into the singles’ quarter-finals before falling 3-6, 6-7 (8) to Cedarville University’s Joy Kellogg.
"I am extremely proud of my players,” said Coach Ferguson. “They showed a lot of determination and poise against the best teams and players in the Midwest."
