Huntington University’s Women’s Auxiliary to host fall breakfast

Dr. Matthew Ruiz, Huntington University, a Christian collegeHUNTINGTON, Ind.— Huntington University’s Women’s Auxiliary’s Fall Breakfast will be held at 9 a.m. Sept. 17 in the upper level of the Habecker Dining Commons on campus. The speaker will be Dr. Matthew Ruiz of the Huntington University Exercise Science Department.

Ruiz’s topic is “Energy for Everyone! Exercises for Your Comfort Zone that can strengthen your body, mind, and spirit.” He will be showing types of exercises for various types of “comfort zones.”

Ruiz was a competitive baseball player, basketball player and personal trainer for 14 years. He has conducted applied sport psychology consultations since 2001 with various athletes and teams including volleyball, swimming, baseball, gymnastics, football and tennis. His research interests include the effect of positive emotion on physical activity performance, exercise adherence, sport nutrition, the effect of Christianity on sport and exercise and the psychology of youth sport. He has done research that will be published shortly on warm-up for the lower body.

Special music will be by Philip Slane, baritone, and Missi Wust, piano. Slane is a senior choral education major who recently became a member of the Heartland Chamber Chorale of Fort Wayne, a professional chamber choir. He also sings with the Huntington University concert choir, the men’s acapella group, and the Treblemakers. Wust teaches piano for the university, and accompanies for both the music and theater departments.

The Huntington University Women’s Auxiliary exists for the purpose of linking campus and community. It provides help with amenities in university dorms, as well as maintaining some scholarships. The project for this year is to sponsor reupholstering of the furniture for Roush dorm lounge.
