Smelser, Johnson earn Athlete of Week honors

Huntington, Ind.—The Huntington University Athletic Department announced its Athletes of the Week for the week of Sept. 22-28. Women’s volleyball junior Brittney Smelser and men’s cross country senior Nick Johnson earned the honors for their outstanding efforts during the week’s competitions.

Brittney Smelser, an economics and finance major from Huntington, Ind. (Huntington North High School), had an outstanding weekend for the Foresters. Smelser tallied 30 kills in one match and averaged 4.4 kills per game during Huntington’s Quad Tournament. She also added a team-high 34 digs and 12 aces. Smelser’s performance earned her a spot on the All-Tournament Team. The Foresters are 11-8 on the season and return to action on Oct. 1 when they travel to Marian College for a 7 p.m. start.

Nick Johnson
Nick Johnson, an exercise science major from Huntington, Ind. (Huntington North High School) turned in an outstanding performance at the Roy Griak Cross Country Invitational at the University of Minnesota. Johnson won the small college race with a personal best time of 25:15. He helped lead the NAIA 13th-ranked Foresters to a seventh place finish in a field of 22 teams, which was a spot above NAIA second-ranked Black Hills State. HU will next host the E. DeWitt Baker Invitational on Oct. 4 at 10:30 a.m.
