Huntington, Ind.—The Huntington University Athletic Department announced its Athletes of the Week for the week of Sept. 24-30. Women’s tennis senior Katie Sprunger and men’s cross country sophomore Joseph Njeri earned the honors for their outstanding efforts during the week’s competitions.
Katie Sprunger, an economics and finance major from Berne, Ind. (South Adams High School), won five of her six matches during the week to help lead Huntington’s tennis team to a 2-1 record. Sprunger recorded the Foresters’ lone victory against Taylor with her 6-4, 6-2 win at #4 singles. Against Indiana Tech, she teamed with Kyla Zartman for the 8-2 win at #3 doubles, and she got the easy 6-0, 6-1 win in singles. In the Goshen match, Sprunger and Zartman were 8-4 winners in doubles play and Sprunger won 7-5, 6-1 in singles. The Foresters (9-3, 5-2) return to action on Oct. 3 when they host Indiana Wesleyan University at 2 p.m.
Joseph Njeri
Joseph Njeri, a sociology major from Nairobi, Kenya, had a stellar performance in the Roy Griak Cross Country Invitational held at the University of Minnesota. Running against more than 250 competitors including several from NCAA Division I and II institutions, Njeri paced the Foresters with a 12th place finish in 26:27. Huntington will next host the E. DeWitt Baker Invitational on Oct. 6 at 10:30 a.m.
