Huntington, Ind. - It wasn't exactly how the Forester baseball team (0-8) wanted to start spring break as they dropped a pair of games, 17-4, 7-5, to the Eagles of Asbury University on Saturday afternoon.
HU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after Adam Christner started things off with a double and eventually crossed the plate in the opening inning but the Eagles stormed back in the bottom of the frame behind Matt Ciolek's three-run homer to quickly erase the deficit and take a 5-1 lead.
Asbury notched two more runs in the second before Huntington's Eric Schultz blasted a two-run shot over the right field fence in the third. After singles from Justin Branock, Marc Bowers and Ethan Tribolet to load the bases, Josh Lanphier's sacrifice fly scored Branock to push HU's run total to three for the inning.
Not to be outdone, the Eagles exploded for eight runs in the third and added two more in the fourth as they cruised to the easy 17-4 win.
Tribolet took the loss for HU giving up five runs on five hits and two walks in 2/3 innings. Schultz finished with two hits and two RBI to lead HU at the plate. Christner added a double and single.
In game two, the Eagles took advantage of two errors in the second to score three runs. They would add one in the third to take a 4-0 lead before the Foresters scored. Huntington got on the board with two in the fourth on a pair of doubles from Hammel and Lanphier and a single from Bowers. Asbury matched that in the bottom of the frame to push ahead 6-2.
HU got one back in the fifth and kept things interesting by adding two more in the seventh when Branock knocked one over the center field fence but the Foresters' late-game rally came up short as the Eagles held on for the 7-5 win.
Xyan Adkisson took the loss on the mound and lasted five innings, giving up six runs, three earned, on seven hits and one walk while striking out four. Josh Niedermeyer worked the final inning and gave up one run on two hits while striking out one. Hammel collected two hits and one RBI to lead the Foresters.
