HU (9-9, 2-0) came up with a big inning in each contest against Marian University to sweep the Knights, 5-4 and 8-6, in the Forester baseball
team's MCC home opener.
After falling behind 3-0, the Foresters stormed back in the bottom of the fourth to score four runs and grab the 4-3 advantage. Andrew Drummond started HU's fourth inning rally with a single to center and Travis Frantz drove him home with double and a little help from a bobbled ball by the Knights. Eric Schultz bunted for a single and Jarod Hammel drove in two more runs with his double to left. Jamon Hammel then stepped up to the plate and singled up the middle to score HU's fourth run of the inning.
Marian tied things back up in the top of the fifth but the Foresters quickly regained a 5-4 lead in the bottom half of the frame. Eric Schultz and Adam Christner led off with back-to-back bunts and Christner eventually scored on a Knight fielding error to earn the come-from-behind victory.
Mitch Bowers went the distance for HU to pick up the win, giving up four runs on nine hits while striking out six. Jarod Hammel paced the Foresters at the plate with a hit and two RBI.
In game two, the Foresters grabbed the early 1-0 lead after Schultz doubled to left and eventually scored on a misplayed grounder in the bottom of the first. The Knights responded with two runs in the top of the third but the Foresters exploded for five runs in the bottom of the frame on seven hits and a Knight error to take the commanding 6-2 lead. The inning started with three consecutive singles by Schultz, Christner and Drummond. Frantz then delivered the knock out punch when he drilled one over the left field fence for the grand slam. Jarod Hammel tacked on the fifth run of the inning with his second RBI-double of the day, driving home Ryan Shell.
Drummond added two more insurance runs in the fourth when he sent one out of the park for a two-run homer extending HU's lead 8-2. The Knights kept things interesting by scoring four runs in the top of the seventh before HU closer Brian Kirschbaum forced two groundouts to foil Marian's attempt to return the favor of a come-from-behind win.
Cody Walters picked up the win for HU. He allowed two runs on two hits and five walks while striking out two in four innings of work. Drummond finished with two hits and two RBI to lead the Foresters at the plate. Frantz recorded a game-high four RBI.
