Led by senior Kellen Zawadzki, the HU men's basketball
team (5-0) was a 78-55 winner over Missouri Valley College (3-1) on Saturday to capture the Ness Bros. Hall of Fame Tournament title.
In a game reminiscent of Friday night, the Foresters came ready to play and never trailed the Vikings. Caleb Kennedy scored five of HU's first seven points to put the Foresters up 7-4 at the seventeen minute mark. They grabbed their first double-digit lead, 18-8, midway through the period but the Vikings outscored HU 16-9 over the next six minutes to cut the lead to three. The half came to a close with four different Foresters scoring to give Huntington the 35-28 advantage at intermission.
After a quiet first half, Zawadzki came to life in the second twenty minutes. He knocked down three treys in three minutes to fuel a 16-6 run and give HU a 51-34 lead at the 14:28 mark. The Vikings never recovered as Huntington's lead mounted to 23 by game's end behind Zawadzki's hot hand.
Zawadzki finished with 31 points, nine rebounds and four assists to pace the Foresters and earn the tournament's Most Valuable Player award. Joining Zawadzki on the All-Tournament team were teammate's Tyler Shively who netted 16 points and dished out six assists and Caleb Kennedy who finished with 12 points and six boards. Chris Hortman was the lone Vikings to score in double digits with 20.
The Foresters host Ohio State Newark on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
