HANOVER, Ind. - After nearly 105 minutes of doing battle with Hanover College, HU’s Jake Essig finally found the back of the net in the second overtime to steal a 1-0 thriller from the Panthers Tuesday afternoon.
With this win, the Foresters improve to 3-1.
Huntington came out strong to set the tone early and it was obvious at the end of regulation and ensuing overtime periods that HU was clearly in control.
“We controlled the momentum of today’s game,” said Coach Lawson. “While it was a well-played match by both teams, we felt we were going to break them. We were getting in behind, especially in the second half and overtime periods, which put a lot of pressure on them.
“Our team defense was excellent and offensively we were extremely creative. It was great to see our guys’ effort and persistence pay off with a win.”
The game-winner came with five minutes left in the second OT. On the heels of a corner kick, Isaac Beal served a ball in far post where Essig was lying in wait inside the six for the easy tap in.
The Foresters generated 17 shots to the Panthers’ eight and enjoyed a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. Drew Mattingly registered the clean sheet in goal and finished with four saves.
HU has a two-day break before facing Roosevelt University on Friday at 5:00 p.m. at IPFW’s Hefner Fields in Fort Wayne.
