HUNTINGTON, IN – Two Huntington College tennis players have recently been awarded NAIA All-America Scholar Athlete honors for the 2002 spring tennis season. Jacob Miles and Brooke Owens earned the prestigious honor, awarded to student-athletes who achieve a 3.5 grade point average or higher.

“I am very blessed to have two such outstanding tennis players at Huntington College,” said head tennis coach, Gary Turner. “Brooke and Jacob are two of the most motivated young people I know. They are great representatives of Christ and HC.”

Miles, a junior Educational Ministries major from London, Ont., played at No. 1 singles all year. He posted an amazing 19-1 singles record for his sophomore season, leading his team to a 16-2 record. Highlights of his year included a win over a Notre Dame University player and winning the NAIA Region 8 Singles Championship. Last fall, Miles was named All-Conference by the MCC (Mid-Central Conference) tennis coaches. Recently, he received the Huntington College Servant Leadership Award, in partnership with the Barney II Foundation, at the Joe Mertz Center for Volunteer Service.

Owens, a 2002 graduate in Business from Kokomo, Ind., made tremendous strides with her game over the course of her senior season. She became a more consistent player and finished her career with a very strong spring season. Owens’ solid tennis play placed her as a natural team leader. Owens finished her season with a singles record of 5-9 and a doubles record of 6-7. The team finished with an overall record of 5-10. In addition to tennis, Owens also served as a 2002 Senior Class Officer (Senator). She plans to attend law school in the fall.

Both Miles and Owens are members of Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athletic Honor Society.

The Huntington College Foresters compete in 14 intercollegiate sports for men and women. In the past six years HC has produced 33 All-Americans and 56 All-America Scholar Athletes. Huntington College is a comprehensive Christian college of the liberal arts offering graduate and undergraduate programs in more than 60 academic concentrations.
