Velez named Forester Athlete of the Week

HUNTINGTON, Ind. - The Huntington University Athletic Department announced its Athlete of the Week for the week of April 2-8, 2012. Men’s tennis senior Augusto Velez earned the honor for her outstanding efforts during the week’s competitions.

Velez, a Computer Science major from Lima, Peru won all four of his matches this past weekend. The Foresters opened their spring season against 13th-ranked Aquinas College on Friday. Velez teamed up with Vlad Khudziy at No. 1 doubles for a 9-8 win before beating his opponent in straight sets at #2 singles.

On Saturday against Davenport University, Velez tag-teamed with Khudziy to take care of business in doubles action and then headed into singles play where he mounted a come-from-behind win. After dropping the first set 2-6, Velez bounced back to dominate the next two sets, 6-1, 6-2, for the win.  

The Foresters are currently 5-9. They return to action on April 14 when they host Trine University at 10:00 a.m.
The Huntington University Foresters compete in 14 intercollegiate sports for men and women. In the past decade, Huntington has produced 53 NAIA All-America honors and 187 All-America Scholar Athlete honors.
