Bowers earns All-America honors

/uploadedImages/News/News_Release_Images/Athletics/Bowers-Katie.jpgHUNTINGTON, Ind. - The awards continue to pile up for Huntington University junior Katie Bowers as the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics announced earlier today her inclusion on the 2012 Softball Honorable Mention All-America Team.

Bowers, the Foresters’ second baseman from Silver Lake, Indiana (Manchester High School), was honored as the Mid-Central Conference’s Player of the Year after ranking in the nation’s top 10 in numerous offensive categories. She was eighth in total triples (7), eighth in batting average (.476), eighth in slugging percentage (.853), tenth in total bases per game (2.596) and tenth in triples per game (.149).

She hammered out 68 hits, 29 for extra bases, while scoring 46 runs and driving in 38 more. She sent nine over the fence to bring her career homerun total to 28. As one of the league’s most feared batter, Bowers worked 15 base-on-balls and was hit by a pitch on nine different occasions while striking out only 13 times this season.

The three-time MCC All-Conference pick guided her team to the program’s most wins in school history with 29 victories against 18 losses.

There were 33 players on the First or Second Teams where their programs participated in the 32-team NAIA National Championship in Gulf Shores, Ala., this year. 
The Huntington University Foresters compete in 14 intercollegiate sports for men and women. In the past decade, Huntington has produced 53 NAIA All-America honors and 187 All-America Scholar Athlete honors.
