Bowers headlines MCC honors

HUNTINGTON, Ind. - The Mid-Central Conference (MCC) has announced its 2012 softball awards and headlining the news is HU junior Katie Bowers as MCC Player of the Year.

The Silver Lake, Ind. native (Manchester HS) is unarguably the league’s best player as voted on by the conference coaches. Bowers currently leads the MCC in hitting with a .485 batting average. She also boasts the league’s highest slugging percentage at .882 and total bases per game at 2.73 in addition to appearing in the top three in nine other MCC designations.

Bowers has also garnered plenty of national attention for her offensive prowess. She ranks in the NAIA’s top ten in four different offensive categories which includes 6th in triples (7), 8th in batting average (.485), 9th in triples per game (.159) and 10th in slugging percentage (.882).

For the year she has logged 66 hits including 29 for extra bases, 43 runs and 37 RBI. She has drawn 11 walks and been hit by a pitch nine times against only 12 strikeouts.

Joining her on the MCC All-Conference team is HU freshman Peyton Klinkhamer (Walton, Ind., Lewis Cass HS). The rookie shortstop has swiped a team best 21 bases and has accumulated 53 hits and 33 runs, second on the team only to Bowers in both categories.

She is currently carrying a .338 batting average and has driven in 11 runs. Defensively, Klinkhamer ranks 5th in the MCC in assists with 88. She boasts a .931 fielding percentage having committed 12 errors in 44 games.

Senior Molly Long , one of the best pitchers to sport a Forester uniform, earned All-Conference honors for the third consecutive year. The Honorable Mention pick has logged 16 wins on the season to go along with two saves while compiling a 2.87 ERA.

Hailing from Logansport, Ind. (Logansport HS), last year’s MCC Pitcher of the Year is currently holding opponents to a .239 batting average. Long has pitched 156.1 innings, striking out 148 batters while surrendering a mere 32 walks. As one of the league’s most feared hurlers, she is averaging 8.52 strikeouts per game and is among the conference’s top four in seven different pitching categories.

Senior catcher Brita Kuiper was also an honorable mention All-Conference pick. At the plate, Kuiper is hitting .342 with 40 hits including nine doubles and a homerun. She has also scored 17 runs and driven in 26 more. Behind the plate the Bellevue, Mich. native (Olivet HS) has logged 169 putouts and 19 assists.
