HUNTINGTON, Ind. - This past Saturday ten members of the Huntington University softball team joined forces with the Huntington County Special Olympics to volunteer at the Fifth Annual Huntington Invitational Basketball Tournament at Riverview Middle School and Horace Mann Elementary.
In all, 285 athletes on 34 teams from 15 different counties participated in the tournament. The Foresters spent the day keeping the scorebook, running the clock and managing the scoreboard.
This past fall Huntington University was recognized as a recipient of the NAIA Champions of Character Five Star Award and Head Softball Coach Doug Gower wants to make sure his team is living out its five core values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership.
“I feel that volunteering for an activity like this gives people from the community an opportunity to get to know what my girls are about,” commented Coach Gower. “The more we interact with and give back to the community, the more people will want to follow our porgram. I have an awesome group of girls that Huntington can be proud of. In the end they had a great time with the athletes of Special Olympics, and we built a little more team chemistry!”
