WEST LAFAYETTE, IND. - The Huntington men's and women's track and field teams opened their indoor season on Saturday with the Purdue Invitational at Lambert Fieldhouse. Competing against NCAA Division I Purdue, St. Ambrose and Cornerstone, the Foresters landed several top five finishes on the day.
Joseph Herber paced the men with two third place finishes. In the mile, he crossed the line in 4:24.09. He followed that up with a 2:04.04 in the 800-meter run. Right behind him in the 800 were teammates Antonio Castillo (4th, 2:06.72) and Matt Bittner (5th, 2:08.05).
Todd Fiedler turned in HU’s highest finish by placing second in long jump with a leap of 20-06.25.Making his college debut, HU freshman Scott Skiles ran to a third place finish in the 200-meter dash in 24.00. Other top five finishes for the Foresters included Logan Knox in shot put (5th, 41-04.50), Brian Menzie in the mile (5th, 4:38.69), Kendall Bates in the 200-meter dash (5th, 25.42), Nathan Rupp in the 3000-meter run (4th, 9:36.38) and Patrick Njugana in the 300-meter run (5th, 9:56.33).
On the women’s side, a trio of freshman topped the Foresters. Erin Rockey ran a 2:26.59 in the 800-meter run to finish third. Joining her with a third place finish was Gretchen Spahr who ran the 3000-meter run in 10:51.08. Racquel Service snagged two top five finishes in her first collegiate meet, finishing fifth in the 60-meter dash (8.30) and fourth in the 200-meter dash (27.70).
Other top five finishes for the Foresters included Cendall in the mile (4th, 5:34.32), Natalie Spahr in the mile (5th, 5:52.61), Lindsay Schroeder in pole vault (5th, 8-00.50), Ashley Williams in shot put (5th, 31-11.25) and Rachel Bayon in the 200-meter dash (28.54).
The Foresters will be back in action on Friday at Grand Valley State University (Mich.) slated for 2:00 p.m.
