Huntington, Ind.—The Huntington University Athletic Department announced its Athletes of the Week for the week of Sept. 21-28. Women’s volleyball senior Brittney Smelser and men’s tennis senior Gonzalo Vivas earned the honors for their outstanding efforts during the week’s competitions.
Brittney Smelser, a senior economics and finance major from Huntington, Ind. (Huntington North High School), had an outstanding week for the Foresters. Against IU East she led HU with 20 kills, four aces and 24 digs. Over the weekend she helped the Foresters go undefeated in its own Huntington University Classic. She recorded 37 kills, 61 digs and five aces in the three matches. Huntington (8-6) returns to action on Sept. 23 when they host Marian University at 7 p.m.
Gonzalo Vivas, a business management major from Lima, Peru, had a fantastic performance on the tennis court at the ITA Midwest Regional Tournament at Cedarville University. Vivas won five consecutive matches over the three day tournament to become the men's singles champion. He will now compete in the ITA National Championships in Mobile, Alabama October 15-18. The Foresters (1-3) host Manchester College on Sept. 23 at 4 p.m.
The Huntington University Foresters compete in 14 intercollegiate sports for men and women. In the past eleven years, Huntington has produced 64 NAIA All-America honors and 158 All-America Scholar Athlete honors.
