Huntington, Ind. - Huntington University freshman Liesl Davenport was named the Mid-Central College Conference Player of the Week for the week of November 28, 2011.
Davenport, a 5-9 forward from Andrews, Ind. (Huntington North High School), willed the No. 13 Foresters to a 68-65 road win over 7th-ranked University of Saint Francis on Tuesday.
After a quiet first half, she exploded for 16 second half points to spearhead a fast and furious comeback to finish with a season best 18 points on 5-for-8 shooting. She also grabbed four rebounds and nabbed two steals in her 35 minutes of error-free basketball.
Down by 16 points with just over six minutes remaining, HU went on a 20-1 tear thanks in large part to the play of Davenport. She knocked down her first three of the season with just over five minutes remaining to trim the lead to 11 and then scored eight of the Foresters’ final 15 points to record one of the most impressive comebacks in program history.
As a team, the Foresters currently lead the NAIA Division II in free throw percentage at 85.1%. To date they have knocked down 126 of their 148 free tosses. HU (4-2, 1-0) is back in action on Wednesday when they host Marian University at 7:00 p.m.
