It was opening night at the Merillat Complex for the Huntington University Foresters (1-0) and they came away with a 67-53 win over Indiana Institute of Technology (0-1).
With the game being called closely in the first half, it was difficult for either team to get into an offensive rhythm. Both teams shot poorly from the field with neither being able to gain much momentum. After six ties and nine lead changes, the Foresters finally put together several stops over the final four minutes of the half take a 32-28 lead at the break.
HU regrouped at the half and opened the second stanza with 12-4 run to take a 44-32 lead at the 13:27 mark. The Warriors cut it to nine on a trey by Hannah Thieke, but the Foresters came back with another 10-4 spurt to push their advantage to 15 at 54-39 with just under eight minutes to play. Indiana Tech pulled back within nine one more time on a long three by Paige Weaver, but HU halted the rally with one last 6-1 run to close out the game.
The Foresters put two in double figures with Jenna Donaldson leading the way with a double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds. Lauren Davenport added 15 points and five assists. Kelsey Green came off the bench and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Amanda Tipton led the Warriors with 22 and Thieke chipped in 10. The Foresters out-rebounded Indiana Tech 53-40 with a 21-11 advantage on the offensive boards.
