In the opening round of the Viterbo University NAIA Showcase, the St. Xavier Cougars showed why they’re ranked 7th in NAIA Division I by outlasting the Foresters 69-56.
The Foresters got off to a good start by holding a 17-7 lead ten minutes into the game. HU then got into some foul trouble and the Cougars capitalized on the Foresters’ poor transition defense allowing them to go on a 24-5 run to end the half 31-22.
Sarah Miller scored five of HU’s first seven points of the second half to close the gap to single-digits, 37-29, at the 16:34 mark but it would be the closest the Foresters would get to the 7th-ranked Cougars. St. Xavier went up by as much as 18 points midway through the half but the Foresters responded with one more spurt ignited by a Jenna Donaldson three pointer from the corner. The never-say-die Foresters cut it to within 11 points with just over two minutes left in the game but the Cougars knocked down free throws to seal the 69-56 victory.
Miller scored a team-high 15 points. Donaldson chipped in ten points and Kelsey Green recorded 9 points and led the team with ten rebounds. Kathlyn McClain led all scorers with 19 points. She had help from teammate Marissa Young who turned in an 18-point performance.
