Indianapolis, Ind. - It was a season cut short as the 5th-seeded Forester women’s soccer team dropped a heart-breaking 2-1 decision to the 4th-seeded Knights of Marian University on Saturday afternoon in first round action of the MCC tournament.
With this loss, HU wraps up its 2011 season with an overall record of 10-6-3.
After playing to a 0-0 tie in the first half, the Knights struck first in the 66th minute to go up 1-0. Just over two minutes later, Eric Barclay netted her fifth goal of the season on a lofted shot from 25 out to close the gap.
It looked like the match was heading to overtime but with 36 seconds remaining, the Knights capitalized on a corner kick to find an empty net and catapult them into the semi-finals of the conference tourney.
Marian outshot the Foresters 26-14 and landed 11 corner kicks to HU’s two. HU keeper Samantha Barclay finished with ten saves.
“We played really hard today but didn’t execute,” commented Coach Burgher. “We didn’t play the style I had in mind in the first half and didn’t generate much offense. After some corrections at half time we started to generate more offense and had three or four really good chances but we didn’t finish any of them. You can’t win when you aren’t finishing your good chances.”
“I’m a believer that it takes more effort than skill to score off a corner, and that is something I talk about every game. So to lose off a corner with :36 seconds left is mind blowing.”
The Foresters wrap-up the season having tied the school record for most wins in a season with 10, eight of which were shutouts . HU also received votes in the national rankings for the first time in program history.
