Internships can confirm life choices

As an intern for the American Red Cross of Huntington County, Amie Arthur observed firsthand the planning involved in a benefit banquet that raised $32,000.

“Through the event planning, I found that I liked working together with a group of people who are passionate about serving the community,” she said.

Additionally, Arthur was given the responsibility of redesigning the chapter’s website and updating brochures, flyers and the annual newsletter. These tasks were not, however, daunting or tedious to her because she felt well-prepared by her coursework at Huntington University.

“My computer graphics class helped me in this internship because I made a flyer for the banquet that looked professionally made,” Arthur said. “Also, I took concepts from my communication classes and applied them to things that I either experienced myself or saw firsthand in my internship.”

Even though her projects took some time to complete, Arthur acknowledged the merit of her labor quite easily. “I experienced the special tasks that I knew were valuable to the organization’s progress. It was something that they did not have to take the time to do because they didn't have as much manpower, and it gave me the experience.”

Arthur found her internship opportunity through the university’s Enterprise Resource Center.

“They work with you one-on-one to help you find an internship that meets the needs that you are looking for,” said Arthur, who at the time was a junior public relations major, from Pandora, Ohio. “I would definitely recommend an ERC internship to any student. The knowledge and skills that you learn through the internship helps you gain a full perspective in your future career choice.”

Arthur said her experience during the January Term of 2008 verified her desire to work with a not-for-profit business and possibly even continue her career at the Red Cross.
