Huntington, Ind.—Huntington University announced the Mother and Father of the Year awards at a luncheon during Parent Weekend, Nov. 2-3. The winners were nominated by their children and selected by the Huntington University Parent Council.
Dr. G. Blair Dowden, president, presented the recipients with plaques.
The Mother of the Year is Karen Garman of Angola, Ind., nominated by her daughter Erica (Garman) Barrows.
“I wouldn’t be where I am today without the positive impact I received from my mother,” said Barrows, a junior economics and finance major from Angola. “She is hardworking, devoted, loving, honest, and caring. She also has been a huge influence on my faith. She sends me cards throughout the week with Bible verses and just letting me know that she’s praying for me. It’s reassuring to know that she is praying in me and believes that I can do anything.”
Father of the Year Larry Pryor with his daughter Lindsay Pryor
The Father of the Year is Larry Pryor from Indianapolis, Ind., nominated by his daughter, Lindsay Pryor.
“Throughout my lifetime I have seen how you have allowed Christ’s light to shine through you in all that you do, and through that, you have shown me the kind of love that many people never get to experience,” wrote Lindsay in nomination letter addressed to her father. “Growing up, you have not only been my friend, you have also, most importantly, been my parent. I know everything you have done for me has been out of love. I am so thankful that over the years we have been able to develop a loving relationship with Christ as the foundation. I will always remember your willingness to help me during my times of need.”
Pryor is a junior entrepreneurial/small business major from Sheridan, Ind.
Huntington University’s Parent Weekend gave parents the opportunity to attend class with their child, meet other parents at an ice cream social and talent show, participate in a 5K walk/run, play disc golf, and explore campus through a scavenger hunt.
