Huntington University" As you wade through the pile of college propaganda rapidly accumulating on your bedroom floor, it becomes painfully obvious that a lot of Christian colleges sound the same. And to some extent we are similar. We have tried to give you a sense of how Huntington stands out in the great realm of college choices. We now enter the pull-no-punches phase by focusing on the distinctive areas where Huntington not only stands out, but in some cases stands alone. Campus -Simply one of the most beautiful around. The spectacular landscaping and trees are enhanced by Lake Sno-Tip, located smack in the middle of everything. Bring your Jet-Ski! (Okay, let's stick with the more environmentally safe fishing pole).
Facilities - The North Central Association accreditation team consider the physical facilities of Huntington University to be among the finest among liberal arts colleges. The buildings are modern and very impressive. HU's campus has almost entirely been rebuilt in the last few years. Majestic Becker Hall, built in 1897, towers over the campus as a reminder of our foundation and rich tradition. See it for yourself with our Virtual Reality Tour. Size - There is a sense of warmth and family that simply cannot be replicated on campuses with large student bodies. Our 900 students come to live together for nine months a year with our faculty and staff. They become involved in programs and take leadership roles in organizations that may not even be an option for them at a larger school. Faculty - We mentioned these folks earlier, they
are incredible! Not only are they wonderful people, but the fact is that just over 80% of
them hold an earned doctorate, one of the highest percentages in the Coalition of
Christian Colleges and Universities.
Joe Mertz Center - Built right into Huntington's campus is the Joe Mertz Center for Volunteer Service, an organization that creates opportunities for HU students to be involved in volunteer service. About 70% of our student body annually participates in community service through the JMC, doing everything from painting churches to raising money for heating bills of the elderly. Scholarships - This one always gets people's
attention. We have a variety of scholarship opportunities from academic to athletic, but
then again, so do most other colleges. There are some unique scholarship opportunities
available to you at Huntington if you are a member of the United Brethren in Christ
Church, one of our fellow Federation members (Evangelical Congregation, Primitive
Methodist and Southern Methodist) or involved as a Youth for Christ or Young
Life student leader. These
scholarships range from $2000 to $3500 a year and are in
Athletics - The facilities for both training and performing at Huntington are outstanding. HU has a tradition of athletic excellence, but given the size of our student body that tradition is even more impressive. In recent years we've sent both entire teams and individual athletes to NAIA national tournaments. HU consistently produces All-American and academic All-American athletes. Check out the athletic schedule. Theatre Program - For openers, theatre is a major that many Christian colleges do not offer and one which enjoys tremendous facilities and faculty direction at HU. Many performers in our stage productions are not theatre majors. Our whole campus gets involved to celebrate the arts. We also feature a traveling music-theatre ministry troupe that goes out every summer traversing this great land of ours. Learn more about HU's Theatre Company. Link Institute for Faithful and Effective Youth Ministry - An incredible program for ministry preparation which has brought two of the top youth ministry specialists in the country together to teach and train on our campus. One unique aspect of the program is the combination of practical experience and practical research. Every youth ministries student will enjoy a seven-month immersion into an unusually effective off-campus ministry where they will do evaluation and be visited on location by their professor. All over the country, anywhere in the world. Link up with the Link Institute. Majors - You will want to peruse the list of majors offered at Huntington to see if there are those that particularly warm your heart. Some of the HU programs you won't find everywhere else are broadcasting, exercise science, graphic design, missions, recreation management, theatre arts, and youth ministries. Our more traditional offerings have their own distinctives, for example: Our education department is accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education; fewer than one-third of the colleges offering education meet NCATE's rigorous criteria. Visiting is believing! We have said a lot of stuff that sounds neat, but you may still be a little skeptical. Hey, most people don't believe Rice-a-Roni truly is the San Francisco treat until they try it out. We want to invite you to give Huntington University a test drive. We would relish the opportunity to show you that HU is all that we have said and yet more. Come and meet our staff, our faculty, and most importantly, our students. See what we mean when we talk about the Huntington family. The housing and food are provided for you and your entourage, so pile into the ol' mini van, fire that bad boy up and head for Huntington! In Closing. Please consider us an information resource for you and your family as you make this arduous college selection journey. We simply want you to get an accurate picture of Huntington University so you can decide whether this is the place where the Lord would have you spend the collegiate portion of your life. We hope you will give us that opportunity. Thanks for your time, We'll talk to you soon! |
