Mentoring:
An aunt, an uncle, several cousins, and both parents graduated from Huntington University. So when it came time for Elizabeth Hanna to select a college, she naturally chose Huntington. “It was a family heritage for us. I couldn’t imagine myself anywhere but Huntington.” That should come as no surprise. Elizabeth can still recall walking around the campus during Homecoming when she was just a kid. “I felt at home at Huntington even then.” A 2004 Huntington graduate, Elizabeth works as an interdisciplinary cooperative education coordinator at Columbia City High School in Columbia City, Ind. She graduated as a business education major and appreciates her college experience because she knows her Huntington professors could not have prepared her better. “I left Huntington feeling very prepared in both the areas of education and business,” Elizabeth said. “I took most of the same business classes as the business management majors, which I feel helped to give me a more thorough knowledge of business. The Education Department, as well, really prepared me for the interview process in addition to everyday in the classroom.” Elizabeth provides vocational experiences for high school students by placing them into jobs at local businesses within the community. Her responsibilities also include monitoring the students’ performance and teaching an ICE-related class. The class equips students with important work-related skills such as effective communication and human relations. She is continually challenged with matching students, and their career goals and skills, with businesses in a way that is mutually effective. Elizabeth’s most interesting challenges have come from giving students adult responsibilities and showing them how to be professional. “Oftentimes these lessons are life lessons learned the hard way.” Elizabeth also gained networking skills through various campus activities, professors, church and other activities. “Meeting so many community members helped me prepare specifically for my role as the ICE coordinator because I deal with so many local business and industry leaders of Whitley County.” After graduating from Huntington, Elizabeth went on to obtain her Vocational Endorsement from Ball State University in the summer of 2005 and completed her Master’s Degree in Business Education from Ball State University in July of 2007. Studying at a large, public school helped Elizabeth appreciate her Huntington experience even more. “There is a great deal to be said that each one of your professors knows you by name and has so much interest and compassion in who you are and what your future goals are. I truly feel that the professors and staff at Huntington care about each of the students, their education and wellbeing.” Even though Elizabeth knew in elementary school that she would attend Huntington, the Christian atmosphere of the campus was a big draw. “The strong commitment to faith that Huntington provides in all areas of campus life—classes, chapel, staff, even residence halls—allowed me to have a constant reminder of who I am, what I believe and how I should live my life,” Elizabeth said. “I believe that Huntington helped me to stay on track with my faith. I know that if I had gone to a different school, I would have started to stray from the faith that I had known my whole life.” Huntington’s Education Department offered Elizabeth a significant experience off-campus as a student teacher in the multicultural practicum. That opportunity gave her valuable skills teaching and working with students from different cultural backgrounds. “I was able to work with two different teachers in the South Side Business Department teaching small lessons, working one-on-one with students, and observing different educational practices. It opened my eyes to cultures I previously had little experience with as well as fueling my excitement to work with high school aged students.” To students curious about her major Elizabeth said, “I would suggest that any student interested in Huntington and business education should meet with some of the business professors on campus. [They] bring with them a wealth of real-world business experience.” And in general, Elizabeth said, “Huntington provides an excellent education that will more than prepare you for your future.”
