Telling their stories:
At Huntington University, junior film studies majors Jason Eberly and Nathan Hartman tell their stories. “In one semester, I created a 20-minute film using high definition cameras, the best local locations, and the newest in editing software as a sophomore,” Nathan said. “Those are the opportunities available to you with very little in-class film training.” Jason particularly appreciates earning a liberal arts degree as opposed to just training in filmmaking. “Unlike other film schools that cannot give me a college degree, HU has helped me develop a solid understanding of the entire communication field,” he said. Both are grateful for the tools at their disposal. “Huntington has amazing equipment that is always available to students,” Jason says. “We, in turn, use these resources to create professional projects that will help prepare us for experiences after we graduate.” When Nathan looked for a university where he could focus his passion, Huntington’s distinctives set it apart. “For one, film studies is not exactly a field many Christian universities have. When I was deciding where to go, I did a lot of looking around and nobody, both technically or conceptually, even came close to Huntington and the standards the university has set for the department.” Film has given Jason an avenue to share his faith. “At HU, I have learned that my art—explicitly Christian or not—is a powerful representation of my beliefs,” he says. “Film is the definitive medium of our time.” For a sample of their work, watch “Writing Roses,” directed by Jason and written by Nathan.
