In the Foresters’
four-game series with the Marian College Knights, three games required
extra-innings to decide. At Marian on Thursday, HC fell 5-4 in eight
innings, but in game one on Saturday, the Foresters returned the favor
with an identical eight-inning 5-4 win. It was the Knights that had
the final say as they came from behind to get the 9-4 victory in nine
innings in game two.
In the opener,
Marian took scored two runs in the top of the second, but the
Foresters came up with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take
the lead. The Knights evened it up with two more in the top of the
sixth. With neither team able to generate a scoring opportunity in
the seventh, they headed to extra innings. HC’s Jeremy Rodibaugh, on
in relief of starter Tim Burris, held the Knights in check in the top
of the eighth, and then led off with a single in the bottom half.
Brian Porter moved him to second with a one-out single, which brought
Andy Janzen to the plate. Janzen hit what appeared to be a double
play ground ball, but Porter went in hard at second to try and break
it up. The second baseman made a throwing error on the turn allowing
Rodibaugh to score the winning run. Rodibaugh worked two innings and
gave up no runs on one hit and two walks while striking out three to
pick up his first win of the season.
In game two, the
Foresters did all of their damage in the fourth inning to take a 4-0
lead. Marian got one back in the fifth and then tied it with three in
the sixth. Both teams were held scoreless in the seventh and eighth
innings, but then the Knights exploded for five runs in the top of the
ninth to put the game out of reach. Michael Dalton (1-1) took the
loss for HC. The men are now 10-18 for the year and are 5-7 in the
MCC. |
