- After knocking off the University of St. Francis 7-5 in game
one, the Foresters (17-16, 6-8) took an 8-6 lead into the bottom of
the seventh in game two, but couldn't complete the sweep as they
allowed the Cougars to rally for the 9-8 win.
In the opener, HU's Keith Benbow got
a two-out single to drive in the first two runs of the game in the top
of the second, but the real damage was done when the Foresters got out
the heavy lumber in the third. Andy Janzen smacked a one-out
single to left and then Korey Grow followed that up with a blast over
the centerfield fence. Blake Hindsley got things started again
for HU with another single to left and he moved to second on a hit up
the middle by Brad Meyer. Following a Cougar pitching change,
Adam Culy sent one deep to left to clear the bases again giving the
Foresters a commanding 7-0 lead.
St. Francis got one back in the
bottom of the fourth and then tried to mount a rally in the seventh.
Two Forester errors, a Cougar single and a three-run homerun led to
four runs and chased starting pitcher Josh Clark from the game.
Levi Sell came on in relief and got Jon Degitz to pop out to the mound
to earn the save.
Clark (5-4) went six and two thirds
innings in the win. He gave up five runs, one earned, on four
hits and a walk while striking out three. The Foresters, who had
11 hits to just five for the Cougars, were led by Janzen, Hindsley and
Meyer with two hits apiece.
In the nightcap, both teams got off
to quick starts offensively. HU plated two in the first and the
second while the Cougars scored three in the first, one in the second
and two in the third to hold a 6-4 advantage. The Foresters got
one back in the fifth and then looked to be in good shape when they
scored three in the seventh to take an 8-6 lead.
But again, the Cougars put on their
rally caps. Jarrod Wehri immediately cut the deficit in half
sending the first pitch over the leftfield fence. A HU throwing
error, a walk and a one-out single loaded the bases for St. Francis.
The Cougars tied it on a sac fly and reloaded the bases with another
walk. St. Francis got the game-winner when Andy Papagiannis was
hit by a pitch forcing in Mike Ybarri from third.
Grow, who relieved Eric Randel in the
seventh, took the loss for HU. He allowed three runs on two hits
and two walks. Janzen and Zach Crooks each had three hits in the
game to led the Foresters and Grow was 2-4 with three RBI. |
