07.17.06 - Huntington University has announced that Fort Wayne Northrop grad Alex Rinearson has committed to transfer from Butler University to play baseball for the Foresters this fall.  As a freshman at Butler during the spring of 2005, Rinearson led the team in hitting (.372) and RBI (33). Rinearson finished second on the team in hits (64), homeruns (3), and slugging percentage (.494).  His second place conference finish in hitting led Rinearson to be named to the Horizon League All-Newcomer team. Rinearson’s playing time was limited in 2006 because of shoulder surgery.  In high school, Rinearson was named to the Indiana North/South Series his senior year.  He holds career records at Northrop for at bats, hits, RBI, doubles, runs, and homeruns.

“We are just elated that Alex has decided to transfer to HU,” says head baseball coach Mike Frame. “He is a truly great offensive player.  He has demonstrated that he can be a dominate hitter at the college level.  He will step in and make a huge impact for us right away.  He is not only a great player, but is an outstanding leader who plays hard everyday.  He will be limited in the fall as to what he can do because of shoulder rehab, but he is a key addition to our team for the spring.”

Huntington University is a member of the Mid-Central Conference (MCC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).  On the baseball field, HU has captured the MCC regular season championship or conference tournament championship 26 times in 46 years.  The Foresters have also had eight former players go on to careers in professional baseball, including Heath Luther with the Anaheim Angels in 2001 and Greg Slee with the Seattle Mariners in 2004.

Alex is the son of Bob and Bonnie Rinearson of Fort Wayne, IN.
