- After splitting with the Trojans on Friday, the Foresters
(15-12, 9-3) got a pair of wins in the rematch with Taylor University,
winning 7-6 and 12-8. "It
was an extremely difficult day to play," said Coach Frame. "The
conditions made it tough to play with any consistency. We battled all
day and came away with two big wins. It was a team effort in both
games."
HU's Eric Randel got off to a
rocky start in game one allowing five runs on six hits in the first
two innings. The Foresters got two back in the top of the
fourth, but immediately gave one back in the bottom of the frame for a
6-2 deficit. HU continued to battle and rallied to tie the score
at 6-6 with four runs in the sixth. In the bottom of the inning,
Randel gave up a leadoff single, but then got the next three batters
in order.
In the top of the seventh, Alex
Rinearson doubled to left to get the Forester offense started.
Korey Grow was intentionally walked and Andy Janzen bunted for a hit
to load the bases. Then Jon Rolon took one for the team.
He was hit by a pitch, which pushed Rinearson across to give HU its
first lead of the game at 7-6.
A Trojan rally looked bleak with two
outs and the bases empty, but then Paul Passiales drew a walk from
Randel. Passiales quickly stole second and then moved to third
on a wild pitch to give Taylor hope. Next, Nathan Hillery got on
with a walk to put runners at first and third. They tried a
delayed double steal and Austan Kas nailed Passiales at the plate to
end the game.
Randel outlasted Taylor to pick up the
win. He gave up six runs on nine hits and three walks while
striking out two. Grow went 3-3 at the plate with a double and
two runs scored. Rolon was 2-3 and drove in three runs.
In the nightcap, the Foresters
out-scored Taylor 7-1 through the first four innings and then things
got interesting. The Trojans pulled within one with five runs in
the bottom of the fifth, but HU had an answer. The Foresters
loaded the bases with one out in the sixth and Andrew Drummond
delivered the knockout punch with a grand slam, his first homerun of
the season.
Taylor made it 11-8 with a pair in
their half of the sixth, but it would be as close as they would get.
The Foresters added one more in the seventh for the final four-run
margin of victory.
Levi Sell earned the victory for HU.
In four innings of work, he allowed two runs on four hits and five
walks while striking out one. Keith Benbow pitched the final two
innings to pick up his third save. Grow had another big game at
the plate with four hits, including a double, two runs scored and
three RBI. Drummond was 2-2 with four RBI.
